Enter The (Research Data) Puzzle Room

Purple Room

Summary

In this half-day workshop, participants will be invited to explore different viewpoints on building strategic institutional solutions to the puzzle of successfully managing and publishing research data. It will utilise perspectives from IT, libraries, educators, research office, ethics and researchers. You will be asked to interact in a dynamic learning environment via ‘learning corners’, puzzle challenges and technical tools. Based loosely on the Puzzle Room concept, participants will be given props and cryptic clues to help you solve a data puzzle scenario involving an institutional approach to research data management.

Learning Objectives

Understand the diverse needs from various stakeholders in research data management

Understand how to manage data as an institutional asset

Identify the key challenges in developing an institutional approach to research data management

Describe data management solutions which support the needs of various stakeholders

Be challenged and have fun

Abstract

This workshop explores the institutional issues behind the hottest topic of the 21st century: data.  ‘Big data’ and the ‘data deluge’ affects all academic disciplines and brings enormous opportunities for research along with challenges in data collection and management. The ability to analyse and reuse data is rapidly becoming a crucial future skill for education, business, industry and research. By connecting technologists, librarians and educators. our students, researchers and research institutions will have the skills and systems crucial to unlocking the full potential of research data for data generators and data users.

This workshop will juxtapose multiple perspectives from IT, libraries, educators, research office, ethics and researchers to explore strategic institutional solutions to the puzzle of successfully managing and publishing research data. Participants will be asked to interact in a dynamic learning environment via ‘learning corners’, games, puzzle challenges and technical tools. Based loosely on the Puzzle Room concept, participants will be given props and cryptic clues to help you solve a data puzzle scenario involving an institutional approach to research data management.

Some of the elements which will be explored in the data puzzles include: managing sensitive data; storing data; describing data; and connecting systems which count data as research outputs.

We will start with the concept of puzzle rooms and explore components of the institutional research data puzzle. Though the lens of a data board game, you will start gathering ideas for what makes for successful institutional approaches to managing research data assets.

Small groups will then work on various scenario based puzzles to construct a solution to a data problem. Workshop presenters may suddenly drop envelopes to groups containing either a cryptic clue that can help you solve the puzzle, or an additional problem. Props will be provided to help you solve the puzzle with clues possibly hidden in the props.
